What is Alcohol Addiction?

Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism, is a chronic disease that is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to drink alcohol, despite the negative consequences. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), about 15 million adults in the United States suffer from alcohol use disorder (AUD).

There are many factors that can contribute to someone developing AUD, including genetics, mental health disorders, and trauma. People who start drinking at a young age are also more likely to develop AUD later in life. This is why it is important to seek help in programs like AA, Alcoholics Anonymous, sooner rather than later.

Why Rehab is So Important

Alcohol addiction can lead to many problems, both for the person suffering from the addiction and for those around them. Some of the most common dangers associated with alcoholism include:

  • Health problems: Heavy drinking can cause many, including liver damage, heart disease, and cancer. It can also weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses.
  • Mental health problems: Alcoholism can worsen pre-existing mental health conditions or lead to new ones, such as anxiety and depression.
  • Relationship problems: Alcohol addiction can strain relationships with family and friends and even lead to domestic violence.
  • Financial problems: Excessive drinking can lead to job loss or financial instability. It can also be expensive, especially if you need to pay for treatment or damages caused by drunk driving.

If you are struggling with alcohol addiction, it’s important to seek professional help in programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Our counselors and therapists at Sunflower Counseling can provide you with the support you need to recover from alcohol use disorder. We create personalized alcohol treatment plans that address the unique needs of each client.

What Causes AUD?

There is no one single cause of AUD. Rather, it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic, psychological, social, and environmental factors. Some people are more vulnerable than others to developing AUD based on their genes, family history of addiction, mental health status, etc. Additionally, peer pressure, stressors in one’s life, easy access to alcohol, and cultural norms surrounding drinking can all contribute to the development of AUD.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of AUD?

The signs and symptoms of AUD can vary depending on the severity of the disorder. Some people may be able to drink heavily without any noticeable effects while others may start experiencing problems after only drinking small amounts of alcohol. Some common signs and symptoms of AUD include:

  • Drinking more alcohol or for a longer period of time than intended
  • Unsuccessful attempts to cut down or stop drinking
  • A great deal of time spent drinking and/or recovering from hangovers
  • Missing important obligations at work, school, and relationships due to drinking
  • Continuing to drink even though it’s causing problems in relationships and other aspects of life
  • Giving up important activities in order to drink
  • Driving drunk or while under the influence of other drugs
  • Experiencing legal problems due to drinking (DUI/DWI)
  • Continuing to drink despite knowledge of having a physical or mental health problem that could be worsened by alcohol consumption
  • Experiencing other withdrawal symptoms such as shaking hands/trembling legs, irritability , anxiety, nausea, sweating, depression, insomnia, and fatigue when stopping or reducing consumption after heavy drinking.
