As counselors in Missoula, we’re always looking for new ideas. And Tim Ferris’s book “Tools of Titans” is filled with them.

So back by popular demand, okay, not really, but it’s really cool – let’s look at part 2 of the “Wealthy Section” of Tim Ferris’s book “Tools of Titans”. This was one of the best books of 2017.

As we turn to this section we get hit with 2 quotes:

“If you set your goals ridiculously high and it’s a failure, you will fail above everyone else’s success.” – James Cameron

“If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly.” -Anonymous

Top 15 ideas:

#1 Chris Sacca from Shark Tank (he’s also super investor) says that if you’re in a startup go to all the meetings you can, even if you’re not invited to them. If people wonder why you’re there, just start taking notes. “I’ll be taking notes for you.” They like that. It’s a good way to get in. Also make sure you study the company on the side, but take notes!

#2 He also says to be weird. “Weird is why we adore our friends…” I mean look at those shirts he wears he wears – those cowboy shirts. And me I’m totally weird – I’m into virtual reality and float tanks – I’m weird and even totally bizarre. Bizarre is a scary word. But embrace it. Elon Musk, Tesla, Sylvia Plath – these people are weird and bizarre. Weirdness is what sets us apart and gets us hired, Sacca says.

#3 Read Neal Gabler’s biography of Walt Disney, says Marc Andreesen. Makes sense right? Because he’s the ultimate visionary entrepreneur. He also likes this quote by Peter Lynch: “Far more money has been lost by investors trying to anticipate corrections, than has been lost in corrections themselves.”

#4 Arnold Schwarzenneger said, “I wasn’t there to compete. I was there to win.”  He would also say to his competitors, “Did you hurt your knee?” Because it would throw off the body builders. “Did you take any salty foods lately. Because it looks like you have water retention.”  And it would throw them off!  They’d be looking at themselves in the mirror. Arnold also meditates on his biceps when he lifts weights. (He gets into the muscle. Becomes one with the muscle.)

#5 One of Tim’s favorite negotiating maxims: “He who cares the least wins.”

#6 “It’s not what you know, it’s what you do consistently.” –Tony Robbins

#7 Derek Siver, the creator of CD Baby, says, “I believe music and people don’t mix; that music should be appreciated alone without seeing or knowing who the musicians are and without other people around.”

#8 Derek also says “When you make a business, you’re making a little world where you control the laws. It doesn’t matter how things are done everywhere else. In your little world, you can make it like it should be.”

#9 I like this quote by Matt Mullenweg,

“Everyone is interesting. If you’re ever bored in a conversation, the problem’s with you, not the other person.”

Matt is also a fan of the book “How Proust can Change your Life by Alain de Botton.

#10 Check out the Yard aromatheraphy diffuser which Nicholas McCarthy uses everyday. He likes geranium oil. Timothy Ferris agrees and says after dabbing a bit on his wrists on rubbing it on his ears – he actually felt more stamina. He then purchased an InnoGear 200milliliter aromatherapy diffuser in “wood grain.”  I’m going to get one of these too.  Smells are just so magical and they tap directly into memories.

#11 “I didn’t survive, I prepared.” was Nelson Mandela’s answer when tony Robbins asked him, “Sir, how did you survive all those years in prison?”  Tony has so many quotes he reminds me of Benjamin Franklin. Here are 3 cool quotes of his in the book:

“’Stressed is the achiever word for ‘fear.’”

“Losers react, leaders anticipate.”

“Mastery doesn’t come from an infographic. What you know doesn’t mean shit. What do you do consistently?”

#12 Warren Buffett told Tony Robbins, “Investing in yourself is the most important investment you’ll ever make in your life…There’s no financial investment that’ll ever match it, because if you develop more skill, more ability, more insight, more capacity, that’s what’s going to really provide economic freedom…It’s those skill sets that really make that happen.”

#13. Thomas Edison says:

#14 If you ever feel really bad or are having a hard day watch “Little Dieter Needs to Fly” by Werner Herzog. It’s Casey Neistat’s favorite movie.  Casey also gets up at 4:30 every morning to make his Youtube videos.

#15 Kanye West has a giant poster of himself right inside the living room because he says “Well, I got cheer for me before anyone else can cheer for me.”  So maybe you should make a giant poster of yourself and put it in the living room and invite all your friends over and see what they say? I might do this but I’m going to put it my man cave.

You know how I said the Top 15 ideas? Well, we can actually pull off another 15 or so great ideas. So come back next week and we’ll keep it going!
